The Need: A Sandbox for Creatives 
Sunday morning services and large worship nights are foundational spaces for the Church to gather and worship, but founders Joy Best and Henry Hopper kept noticing a recurring challenge for many believers: What happens if your God-given gift doesn't fit neatly into a Sunday morning service?

They saw passionate people getting turned away from serving simply because they weren't seasoned experts, there wasn't a need for what they had to offer, or because their local church didn't have the capacity to train them at that time. They saw believers with raw talent looking who couldn't find a place to practice, experiment, and grow.

They realized there had to be a space where you didn't need a polished resume to contribute. Joy and Henry envisioned a sandbox for creatives. They envisioned a supportive, low-barrier environment where people could try something new, make mistakes, hone their craft, and engage in honest dialogue…

The Spark: A Radical Redefinition of Worship 
The concept of a creative sandbox was just an idea until Joy took a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. There, she witnessed what the Church looked like when the production was entirely stripped away. She saw missionaries who had just worked labor-intensive days gather in public places and break into acappella worship. There were no flashing lights, no soundboards, and no teleprompters, just an authentic, uncontainable desire to glorify God. This raw, stripped-down environment revealed something beautiful: when there is space for it, everyone finds a way to participate. 

Joy wanted to bring that same authentic, "DIY energy" back to Atlanta. When she shared this vision with Henry, the pieces instantly clicked into place. Having personally experienced the disconnect Fleet seeks to address, Henry had always been deeply passionate about putting tangible tools into the hands of creatives so they can develop their skills. He believed that growing in faith shouldn’t be a spectator sport. It happens best when people are actively engaged in the community and surrounded by the right support system.

Together, Joy and Henry set out to build a new, out-of-the-box entry point into Christian community that would come alongside traditional church settings. They wanted to create a space with an incredibly low barrier to entry, where people could discover new gifts and worship freely, whether they were already plugged into a local church or just exploring faith for the first time.

The Execution: Launching Fleet 
In early 2025, Joy and Henry brought those pieces together and hosted their very first open mic night at their home church, Blueprint located in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward. They were expecting a modest gathering, having only received 25 RSVPs.

Instead, over 70 people walked through the doors, and 25 different individuals bravely stepped up to the microphone or volunteered to share their gifts. To this day, that staggering response still shocks them, serving as a constant reminder of just how deeply believers crave a safe place to step out and try new things.

It was this exact visual of so many different people coming together that inspired the ministry's name. In Scripture, the Church is described as a single body made up of many parts, all working together for one purpose. Similarly, a "fleet" is a group of different vessels working together toward the exact same goal managed by a single leader. At Fleet, every single person who performs, volunteers, or simply shows up to support someone else is a vital vessel. We are coming alongside one another to glorify God under his provision.

Since that first night, the ripple effect has been incredible. The sandbox approach is working! We’ve watched community members launch podcasts, release albums, and breathe life into creative crafts that had laid dormant inside them for years. We’ve even been able to connect individuals with opportunities to share their gifts outside of Fleet Nights such as at a Chick-fil-A corporate event. Fleet Nights are never meant to be the end goal. We want to build our community up so they are ready to go out and further expand the kingdom whether that’s taking their giftings to their home church at a higher level or building their own creative projects that amplify the gospel.
